Muerto el monstruo...

Rosa García, 2019.

Performance and installation. Audio in loop (14 min, 30 sec). Bed, round mirror, facial masks, flashlight, knife, and text. Variable dimensions.

Have you seen a white reflection
sliding through the shadow?
Have you noticed? It’s cold…
It shines and whispers in the dark
just like a new knife.
Exhale.
Is your face already burning?
You’re locked in my house
and you’ve just realized it.
Everything is black ahead.
A row of tiny little noises
has just vanished right at your feet.
Just like a shiver.
You’re locked in my house.
You’re locked in with me.

Muerto el monstruo… is a performance and installation that approaches terror as a form of bodily and political inscription. The monster manifests as an internalized construction, a learned way of perceiving and relating to reality. Its bestial character does not stem from its exceptionality, but from familiarity with threat, from that which has been incorporated until becoming active memory, reflex, and a presence attached to everyday experience. The piece emerges from the need to approach fear until embodying it. That which produces threat is reduced to detritus, acquiring a specific consistency: a weight, a silhouette, a way of inhabiting time and space. The action operates by altering the relationship with the entity, displacing its presence and rehearsing ways of reversing the bond, confronting what frightens with its own image. In this gesture, the work seeks to pass through fear, exposing itself to it until modifying the position from which it acts. A text reproduced in audio functions as the narrative axis and, at the same time, as material that persists beyond the event, extending the work into a temporality that never fully comes to a close.
